Azheekkal Sree Varaha Devaswom

The Sreevaraha Temple, established at Azheekkal( Vypeen) in 1565, is the first Gowda Saraswath Brahmin Temple in Krala. It was established by the first batch of G.S. Brahmins, who immigrated from Goa to Kerala in the middle of the 16th century and settled in the Vypeen area. The idol of Sree Varaha was installed in this Temple by the Holy Hands of Sreemad Yadavendra Theertha Swamiji, the first Guru of Sree Kashi Mutt Samsthan(established in 1541). Later, the idol of Sre Venketeswara was also installed in the Sanctum Sanctorum of the Temple.

Due to intermittent attacks of the sea, Azheekkal Yogakkars, the trustees of the Temple shifted it to Cherai, the present site and idols were duly installed in the newly constructed Temple in 1880.

Azheekkal Sreevaraha Temple is the only Temple in India, where both the deities of Sree Varaha and Sree Venketeswara are installed side by side in the same Sanctum Sanctorum and worshipped as a single Moorthy by the name Sreevaraha-Venketeswara. . Again, this is the only Sampoornakshetra of the Bagara Type having all the Seven Avaranas to its credit.

The precious wood carvings adorning the ceiling of the Dhwajamandapa, the ‘Temple Ratha a rarity in the temple architecture, the Rathaveethi and the famous Temple Tank attract hordes of devotees from far and near. CONDUCTING RADHOLSAVAM twice in a year, is an attraction to the public.
